2009-07-30 - Chicago - Travelling the US:
Ok sooo... I went to the US and I am finally back from Canada. Been home for 3 weeks today, and I nearly settled in. I started this Chicago review, got bored and have decided to lump these photos (from Hollywood, San Fran and Chicago) and the unfinished review together to stick on the site...
Our trip to Chicago was relatively slow by modern transportation. We had to take a bus down to Seattle (up at 5am and a 3hour bus journey) and then catch a flight from Taxonamy?? Airport (3.5 hrs) to Chicago O'hare. Once at the airport the trip to the hostel was staight forward as the city is covered in different public transport systems, and a 50min ride took us to within 200m of the hostel.
Our first impressions of Chicago were significantly better than that of Seattle (where we were harrased by a 'bum' right outside of the greyhound station), the people [in Chicago] were extremely helpful and one gentleman even tried ringing the hostel for us when we couldn't find it; all at 1am in the morning having never met us before. In all it took us about 19 hours to reach our final destination, cheap but slow. (110GPB + 24USD + 2.25USD each).
The AAE Parthenon Hostel would be our first residence on our xx day trip and the only one that didn't belong the to the 'USA Hostels' group. A quite simple hostel, I can believe that it is owned and run by a greek family. Breakfast was included (toast, cereal, juice and... boiled eggs). The reviews on the net rated it around 3.5 out of 5, a fair rating as this was a simple but clean hostel. We decided to splash out and stayed in a 2 person private room, the 4 nights we stayed cost us a hefty $404USD, the tax of 15% for hotel rooms increasing the overall cost significantly. The room was cream with a wardrobe and drawers, the bed, made from 2 singles was extremely comfy (although one matress slanted quite a lot) and generally clean. Both towels and bed linen were included in the price, but aren't if you are in a shared room. Our dorm had a common room with fridge, microwave, tv, a single computer and rather flakey WiFi.
The city is exactly what I expected, a mixture of old red brick buildings and new modern glass/steel structures. It's clearly going through some sort continual regerenation, but this didn't distract from its grandure. We spent the majority of our time downtown towards Lake ???, on one occassion we ventured over towards one of the more rural areas to visit the Museum of Science and Industry (A must see by the way). I am not sure of the figures, but I would bet that the largest ethnic group in the areas we visited were African American, especially true by the university. Something I hadn't expereinced in Las Vegas nor New York.
As this was a budget trip, we had to get the best value out of everything. Our top buy to date was the 'City Pass' which, got us access to: - Sears Tower or John Hancock Observatory (High, high buildings to overlook the city, open till late) - The Field Museum (Huge museum full with everthing from animals to chinese pottery) - Planetarium (About our planet, our solar system and beyond) - Aquarium (Fish, Mammals) - Museum of Science and Industry (Brilliant! An old street, huge minature railway.... and a Harry Potter Exhibit) - some pointless vouchers (Magnificent Mail shopping, meh)
It cost a little under $60USD each and not only saved us hours of queing (especially at the MoSaI and Sears Tower), but actually cost less then visiting the attractions seperatly, a real bargain. These 5 places provided enough entertainment for 2.5/3 days worth of activities. For the remaining 1.5 days we visited the following attractions, and generally mulled around the city taking in the sites and the sounds.
- Millenium Park - Taste of Chicago - Fireworks - The Bean - Pier One - Chichago University

2009-06-25 - Vancouver, Canada - Coldplay, Snow Patrol and White Trash:
We've been busy again over the past week! On Saturday we went to a White Trash party (people pretending to be inbred Americans), me and kel went for the true southerner look! There was drink, naked people, a big hammer to see "will it crush", and a mower to see "will it mow". Great Times!
Then on the following Sunday we went to see Coldplay and SnowPatrol at GM place (where the Vancouver giants play). The concert was amazing and if your interested you can download a free album from their website Left Right Left Right.

2009-06-05 - Vancouver - Vancouver Island and The Pub:
The last week or so have been extremely busy here in Vancouver. I've had my 25th Birthday (ahem), we ended up at a pub for drinks and then onto burger and chips (how old!?). We went traveling into the interior (see the blog below).
On Sunday we went down to 'Dear Lake' and went kayaking for an hour ($15, bargain!) which was great fun; even if we did go round in a lot of circles!
On Tuesday, we went flying in a weeee little plain around the Vancouver island. It had 4 seats, 1 propeller and that's about it (see the control panel)! Thank you Matt
On Wednesday I went swimming in Lake, not clear but extremely clean and very refreshing in this 30 degree heat. We're leaving Vancouver soon, so I want to keep doing as many of these types of things as possible

2009-05-28 - Interior, Canada - Travelling through Canada:
We spent a week traveling through the interior in a rented RV (CanadaDream.com). After nearly 2800km and what must have been approaching $600 CAD in fuel (8mpg, ouch), we have:

- Walked on a glacier
- Seen frozen waterfalls
- Eaten glacier water
- Found where I want to live (Banff)
- Seen a wild brown and black bear
- etc...

2009-05-03 - Penthouse, Burnaby - More Penthouse Pics:
Spent some more time taking pictures over metrotown this weekend and came up with these... other than that, not a lot has happened
lol
lol2009-04-04 - Burnaby, Vancouver - My Life....:
Ever wondered what your life looks like from the perspective of your computer? 8.5 hours in just under a minute, not bad :-p. Oh and I have a new site as well. AnalRetentive.co.uk, have a look

2009-03-30 - Vancouver Giants, Vancouver - Ice Hockey!:
Last weekend, we decided to go watch a live ice hockey match. The Vancouver Giants Vs. The Cougars (Prince George). Ice Hockey is fast paced, humourous and full of fights, which makes it a brilliant sport (which is saying something coming from me). During the half time they have crowd based events (including people bowling) and droping free things from mini blimps. I cheap, good night out!
2009-03-19 - Whistler, Vancouver - I loveeee snowboarding!:
We had a long weekend recently (Fri through Monday) to visit what will be the 2010 winter Olympics venue. Its in Whistler Village, which is in Whistler, Vancouver and for two days we got to see some of the most beautiful mountains ever; more importantly we got to snow board down them!
I've never snow boarded before, but its very exhilarating (and cold and sore, lol). Happy belated birthday to Jep!

2009-03-08 - Grouse Mountain, Vancouver - Ice Skating on a mountain:
Carols family has come over for a few days, so they've been doing some more tourist type things. Saturday we had a day out at the top of Grouse Mountain, no snow-boarding or skiing (that comes next weekend) but we did get to do some ice skating and drink lots of tea
...
...2009-02-25 - Burnaby, Canada - Site Development:
Not news as such, but the Beta of Safari 4 supports CSS3 100%, so I've been playing around and tweaking the site and with only two lines of code I managed to get round corners and drop shadows... at the moment it uses 'webkit' specific syntax, so it won't render atm as I use only standardised code... wait for IE8, Firefox x.xx and Safari 4.0

2009-02-18 - Burnaby, Canada - Site Updates!:
Ok well nothing new as such, but I have been tweaking the site so that it is now xHTML 1.1 strict compliant, I have also shrunk all the PNGs and the thumbnails (so the site should load quicker)... and I am working on making it CSS 2.1 compliant... I got a new camera as well at the weekend, and Ixus SD880IS, 10MP, image stabilising, bigger screen and .H264 Video Encoding,
nice!
nice!2009-02-16 - Burnaby, Vancouver - Valentines Day:
Happy Valentines day to everybody out there, Sushi and nice meal... its all good

2009-02-09 - Sheffield, UK - Last Years Bday!:
Ok old news I know... but I've uploaded the from my bday last year
. Jep your a legend!

Well after contemplating moving out for some time, we finally got around to leaving. We found a really nice house about 30mins walk from where we lived before, a lot cheaper and with what seems to be a much nicer land lord (so far)
3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, all bills, cable TV, internet, fully furnished for $1400! As opposed to 3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, No Bills, less furniture for $1900... ouch. Kel has had flu for a week or so (bless her) but is feeling better now... and we're all starting to make plans for July (when we want to come home after seeing a lot more of the US...)

2009-01-25 - Las Vegas, USA - More Pics:
Matt gave me a few pics that he took over the space of the holiday, and there are also a few videos that materialised from my compact, so I thought I best update the blog. Warning. These pictures were alcohol induced and that weird stuff I am eating are Onion Rings, mmmmmm $12 Lobster and Steack!
2009-01-18 - Washington, USA - Washington via greyhound:
Well during our visit to NYC we decided that we should visit Washingston, so after a smooth 4 hour coach ride we arrived before any one else got there... excellent! We took some pics, found some breakfast and then visited every monument/attraction we could in the 6 or so hours left to us
- Capitol Building
- Korean War Memorial
- White House
- Washington Memorial
- ermmmmmmm others
2009-01-18 - Las Vegas, USA - Vegas, Vegas!:
This trip was totally random, (3 in a month!) but I got to go to Vegas for 4 nights, and what a trip it was. The Casinos are expensive, but extremely professional, the slot machines rigged and the drinks, generous. Hence my new calling.... a millionaire. I got to do quite a bit of site seeing done, a trip up the Eiffel Tower (half the height of the original), went in most of the famous casinos (Bellagio, Caesar Palace, Palms etc). The Bellagio has the most amazing water fountains on the strike of each hour... its hard to believe all of this is surrounded by arid desert! Thanks Matt

2008-12-31 - New York, USA - New York over New Years!:
I know its late... but we went too NEW YORK for new years. It was brilliant, bloody freezing and tiring, but what a city. Firstly, New Yorkers are overrated (not that friendly) and the sewers smell, the city itself though, the subway, the buildings and the shops are amazing! We got there on the 30th (just) went to times square for the 31st/1st, shopping on the 2nd, Washingston on the 3rd and home again on the 4th (or maybe it was the 5th)... A great opportunity to take pictures and a lifetime experience
. Hopefully the pictures will say more than any words will...

Christmas Day! Today we woke up and opened our presents, I got a coat and a Mag Safe Airline adapter and a new leather wallet and some socks and some sweat bands and some money and and.... At about 10am we started our epic adventure to Libbys (Sams GF aunts house) where we would spend the rest of the day. After 2.5 hours, 4 buses and a hike through a foot of snow we made it (minus my gloves, carrots and celary, which will forever frozen to the bus shelter bench).
When we finally made it to Libbys we had an excellent time, the house was decorated to the max, the food was rich and tasty and everyone was warm and welcoming. We went to a "view" and I got the chance to take some panoramic pictures,
. A big thanks to Libby and family for having us and a BIG happy christmas to everyone at home
, thanks for the gifts everyone!

Today it's been Kels birthday, we've been out for Sushi (was yummy...) we've rented some brilliant films (well they're we're films lol) we've played in the snow (WHITE CHRISTMAS!!, pics coming up soon) and we got take out pizza for tea. This evening we played some scrabble!!
Sam Spielberg made a short film (28mins) and sent it home to the family, but I thought some of you might want to see whats been happening. A new video clip has been included on the video page, enjoy.... oh and HAPPY CRIMBO!!!

2008-12-24 - Burnaby, Vancouver - Kels Birthday!:
It was Kels birthday today, so after unwrapping her presents, renting some DVDs we went for Sushi. Twas amazing! Kel even decided to use chopsticks! On the way back we played in the snow with the rest of the Gang, Jep made a "snowman" and same cleared a path using the dustpan. That evening we watched some films, ate take-out pizza and went bed
Good times!
Good times!2008-12-20 - Burnaby, Canada - More SNOW!:
I couldn't believe it... we've had more snow! This time it snowed almost none stop for about 12hours.... 3.5inchs in places! That was about 4 days ago and because of the sub-zero temperature the snow is still there, its like dust its that fine...
Anyway, to bring it to a close we built a snowman, and it is absolutely brilliant, his name.... Bob!
2008-12-13 - Burnaby, Vancouver - Snow, Snow, Snow!:
Woke up this morning and I couldn't believe my eyes, it was SNOWING, actual SNOW. Not a thin scattering like dandruff but a could 1.5inchs! This is what I came to Canada for. Unfortunately it only lasted about 4 hours and then it started to rain
. I did however get the chance to take some pics (using my compact and my SLR)... take a look below. Oh and shout out to Half Pint ;)

Its been an eventful weekend! On Saturday me and Sam went to the Culture Club Crawl and saw an artist called Judd who makes amazing furniture out of wood, his is 'Straight Line Design'... A and W for tea mmmmmm. On Sunday we went to a Casino for Sams birthday, it was a pretty cool night as I came away $65 dollars up
, Sam and Jep got cheesecake as a consolation lol. Work again tomorrow, which I am looking forward too
.
Oh and I have a new website www.photo-manual.com, its nothing interesting (unless you want a photo manual lol)... Shout out too Sarah (3rd person reading the blog!)

2008-11-23 - Burnaby, PNE - Halloween Video:
I've finally got around to allowing my site to handle portrait videos... and as an example I've uploaded a vid from the PNE halloween night... mmmm toasty lol

2008-11-21 - Italy&Switzerland - Photo from summer 2008:
I know they are extremely late, but here are a couple of pics from Italy and Switzerland when I want traveling with school. There are a lot more pics, but you can get the general idea from the selection here. The panoramic of the Yung Frau is made from almost 5 photos, but still doesn't do the view justice. Loved it

2008-11-17 - Dear Lake, Burnaby - Dear Lake part Deux:
As part of our 'Do something a week' scheme we visited Dear Lake again, but this time we managed to walk around the entire thing and found some cooolll adult swings, ahem! Another opportunity to take some panoramic photos and take pics of Kel that she won't like lol. Tonight we're going to see 'Quantum Solace', mmmmm sweets and 'Monster'. Shout out too Ashley and Chris as I think they're the only people reading this blog!

2008-11-11 - Downtown, Vancouver - Night out Bourbon!:
We went out for the 1st time since we've been here for a real 'piss-up'. Much needed. Bourbon which is near gas-town in downtown Vancouver is a indie/rock bar/club which happened to have a couple of bands on. As the night progressed Sam and Jep got a little worse for wear (to put it kindly). At that point we had to walk half way across the city to find a taxi, ironically Jep thought every moving vehicle was an available taxi lol.
2008-11-07 - Burnaby, Canada - Its officially autumn:
Been very much just getting on with things over the last week or so, but I did get a chance to take a couple of pictures of Burnaby in autumn. The 2nd was taken from the 18th floor... expect some more of these too follow

2008-11-02 - Downtown Vancouver, Canada - Belated photos from the 3rd/4th day!:
Well I finally got my new 'MacBook Pro'
and thats given me the opportunity to retrieve, sort out and show you the photos I've taken. These photo's were taken around Stanley Park at Downtown Vancouver, which was beautiful there was also a religious festival on (nuff said)... anyway I got a new laptop YAY!!!

Tonight we went to the PNE Halloween themed theme park night! Woo for $22 dollars you get to go on most of the rides (some good, some, not so good) and walk around in the rain. We had a brilliant time!
Some of the haunted houses were v.poor, they didn't even use animatronics (just people with make-up, lol). We finished the night off with a fudge apple, mmmmmmmm f-u-d-g-e :-p

Today we visited the British Columbia Stadium's Museum, where the BC Lions American Football team play. Woo! It wasn't as much fun as the Science World (it wasn't as interactive) but there was some cool games and displays. Towards the end of the museum is a box that overlooks the stadium
, at some point we're going to have to watch a game! Can't wait.

2008-10-23 - Deer Lake Park, Burnaby - Walking to Deer Lake:
Today I decided wanted to go for a walk after getting over my throat cold... and ended up a 'Deer Lake Park'. In all honesty it's like having 'Bradgate Park' but on our doorstep. It took only 15mins to walk there, so I hope to go back soon! One thing I didn't expect to see was the sign warning people about coyotes
, getting a shot of them would be impressive. Either way, the photo's aren't great but there is a lot of oppurtunity for the future!

Today it's 'Thanks Giving'! I cooked a whole roast dinner and eaten a bucket of iced cream alllrrrigghhhttt! Tomorrow the new MacBook Pro's will be released and I cannot wait! On other news I will be contacting a lawyer tomorrow to sort out a 'Work Permit'! If all goes to plan I could work at 'Earls' or as a programmer... from a pent house apartment
everything is falling into place!
everything is falling into place!2008-10-12 - Vancouver, Telus World of Science - Telus world of science!:
Woooo today we visited one of Vancouver's Science mueseums and had a very interesting time. We spent about 2 hours downstairs completing some puzzles in the foyer! On the next floor we found Sciency things to do with Light, Sound, Movement, Energy etc etc. Probably aged for 4+, but it kept us all intellectually challenged ;) . The pictures are probably the best way to see what I mean, have a look at the pics of me and Sam at 70, classic!
2008-09-30 - Burnaby, Canada - Slow progress finding a job!:
Hmmmm well I wish I had something absolutely amazing to tell, but... well I don't. We've been looking for jobs for the last few weeks and while Sam is feverishly working away downstairs, Jep is working with 'The Rock' and Carol has some leaflet work, no one has a set 9-5 job yet, which is disappointing
On a plus note, we have got a very cool wooded area about 5mins from where we live. It has all the usual wooded area facilities... plants, animals, insects and an infinite number of toilets! I took a few pics down there today, but didn't find anything special. It's difficult to take uncluttered photos in such a complex area and while these are by no means portfolio pics, I though I would include them anyway.

2008-09-30 - Downtown Vancouver, Canada - Mounty Sam, bit stiff!:
We went out shopping today and on our way back stumbled a cardboard cutout. Ironically Sam doesn't remember posing for this Mounty shot, but the photo is indisputable evidence ;). I have a nice new Crumpler bag, ready for my brand new Apple notebook mmmmmmmm fruity!
2008-09-22 - Burnaby, Vancouver - Computer and house update!:
My laptop has been down for several days and then I had to fix the new internet connection out, BUT I am finally online AND so is the website!
In the last few days we've moved into our new house, been out for Carol and Jeps' 1st anniversary, we cleaned (nuked) the house and got locked out of the new house (Via a lock with no key)
. All in all its been a very busy, but interesting four days

2008-09-17 - Vancouver, Canada - New House in Burnaby!:
We found a house! Woo Woo!
Its in Burnaby about 15mins from downtown Vancouver (via the skyTrain) It's got 3 bedrooms and a kitchen and 2 bathrooms, downstairs we have 'Sam' (another one) who is doing up the basement of the house for the landlord. Its quiet, its quaint and its ours, YAY! I've also bought a JBL ipod dock for the new house

2008-09-16 - Vancouver, Canada - Day 4 in Vancouver, fun fun fun!:
Day 4 in Vancouver! Today we're going to look for some a place to live, we haven't had much luck so far, either they are not available anymore OR they're to far out. Yesterday we had the worlds worst Sushi lol, but we did get to go on the SeaBus and saw our 1st WalMart! Asda eat your heart out!

2008-09-15 - Vancouver, Canada - 1st day in Vancouver! Woo!:
Today is our 1st weekday in Vancouver, and were desperately trying to find a house to call home. The hostel we're in is nice enough, but none of us really want to live from suitcases!
Our hunt has been so far unsuccessful, the people we have rang either don't answer or no longer have property available. Ugh! Jep, Carol and Kel have gone out to a 'swap' meeting, here's hoping they have a little more luck!

2008-09-13 - Mid-Flight, USA - On my way to Canada!!:
Well, I'd like to say the site is up and running. I'd like to say that I've got a job and a visa and immigration wont grill me when I get to Canadian customs... but I can't.
While this blog entry wont reach the wibbly web for some time, I've had nothing else to do for the last eight hours, so an entry seemed quite apt... I am however looking forward to the prospect of seeing another country with my hommies

2008-09-07 - Leicester, UK - Leaving Do!:
This evening we had a 'Friends&Family' open house and a number of peeps came to say hello. Thanks to all that came, it was nice to see you all before me and Sam skip over the pond. Sam hired a 16feet bouncy castle, mum prepared food. Good times

2008-09-01 - Leicester, UK - Zoom Airlines, goes under!:
This morning I woke up to discover disaster had struck our trip to Canada! The company we we're flying with 'Zoom Airlines' went under. They were even stopping people from flying who were sat on the tarmac waiting to leave. Fortunately we'd paid using CC so we should get our money back, in the mean time we've rebooked our flights. 13th September here we come!
2008-08-02 - Italy&Switzerland - School Trip to Italy and Switzerland:
My travels have begun! I've just spent an amazing fortnight with school traveling (via mini-bus) across Europe. Italy was our first port-of call although it could have been el-menorca. Sun, sand and mosquitoes. The area in Italy we went too was nice, but not really the part of Italy you want to see, although we did spend the day in Venice..... maybe Rome next year?
Switzerland on the other hand was simply amazing; mountains, clean, fresh, crisp, storms and heat. It seems Switzerland survives on its sales of swiss-army knifes and Toblerone, yet it is the most expensive country I have visited too date.
